Jiffy Model 30 Owners I Need Advice

I had a 2 horse jiffy whitelightning for 3 years and the rod bearings went out on it. I luckily have a uncle that had a model 30 that is a late 80's model, but he litterally used it only 5 times, everything's in mint condition and it starts right up, he sold it to me for 200 bucks which I beleive was a good deal right? I was wondering if it's normal for fuel to leak out of what I beleive is the carbuerator when I prime it? My last auger didn't have a primer on it so I wouldn't know. The auger bit also spins automatically as soon as I start it unlike my last one. I also was wondering if there were any maintenence tips for this one that I should know since I didn't get a manual with it. Also do you need to prime the engine before you start it, I mean so I wouldn't have to have fuel drip all over or is it bad for it to start without the primer?

Thanks to all the helpfull Lake-Linkers!

Whats the best way to 'summerize' my auger before I put it away? Drain the fuel or just add stabil
there is a screw on top of the carb. that adjusts the idle speed, that is the one you need to adjust. that slows the engine idle down so the clutch is not engaging.if the engine idle is to high the clutch will kick in and out that is the noise you are hearing, the clutch kicks in witch makes the gears move. hope this helps.

Just to clarify the auger didn't spin as I would pull on the recoil, for instance if I pull the recoil and the engine doesn't actually start the auger doesn't spin as I turn the engine over which is what I beleive would happen if there was actually something wrong with the clutch right?

I did try adjusting the carb screws and finally got it to a point where it does start after a pull or two fine and the auger doesn't spin like crazy while idling, but now it still engages the gears as if its not getting enough gas,I can stop this 'banging' together of the gears by loosening the jet in the carb more but then the engine will cut out shortly after because I assume its not getting enough fuel then. Hopefully some of you know what I mean, as if the gears keep jamming sharply together as the engine fires, jarring the whole power head, but theres not enough power to continue spinning the auger

I'm happy enough with it like this but I don't want this to damage the gears.

i do have some jiffy model 30 owners man. in stock they run 3.00 i do service the augers. the auger should not turn when you start the engine. ether it is a clutch prob. or the idle is to high. and yes fuel will leak from the carb if it is primed to much. if you have any questions call or stop in Bill's Service Center 4525 s. 13 st mil.wi. 53221 (414)282-6449 9-5 m-f 9-noon sat. hope that will help.

Fishinghuby,

I didn't find it but there was another link that had a great description of the 3HP engine and carb adjustments with diagram. From what I've seen, the idle screw should be lightly seated then out 1.5 turns and the main screw 5/8 to 3/4 out to start with. The idle speed (torx screw near top of carb) out until it just contacts linkage then in one full turn. Start with the listed settings, run until warm (couple minutes) then adjust to get it to cut without bogging. You may need to adjust idle speed until warm. Best to make the final adjustments on the ice so you can make sure you can get it to scream while cutting a hole.

Like mentioned, if the gas dripping is an issue, rebuild carb should take care of your problem. Kits are about 10 bucks.

Good luck and keep us posted.

For what its worth i have the same auger and i have had it for 18 years....I prime it till gas drips and it starts first or second pull every time...still has original plug.

and i shut it off after every hole and restart to drill next one cause it does want to spin while ideling...maybe it could use adjusting but its been working that way for so long and i hate to fix something thats working.

I would try it first and if it runs fine leave it...its up to you.

Good Luck.

So Venon, or anyone else, you say I have to turn both jet adjustment screws the same amount, I don't just loosen the lower jet screw by itself?

And a side question, is there somewhere in the serial number that says what year a auger is?

Or the swing arm the spring is connected to is stuck. Spray some WD-40 on it and work it back and forth.

The blade spinning on start-up could also be a broken clutch spring.

If fuel is leaking out after using the primer one of two things is going on. You may be pumping the primer too many times. Three, four pumps should be enough. The other thing could be the diaphragm in the carb is brittle or cracked, or the gasket sealing the diaphragm plate is no good. Follow the rubber tube from your primer bulb to the bottom of the carb. You'll find a plate with four screws. Undo those screws to find the diaphragm. Usually only a couple of bucks at a small engine shop. You won't hurt the engine if you don't prime it...but it may not start without at least a couple of pumps. And your high speed jet may be mis-adjusted causing your auger to spin at idle. High speed is the jet on the right. Low speed jet is on the left. Start with both jets one turn out from lightly seated. Hope this helps.

If you have a Tecumseh engine try this link, it may or may not help.
Click on basic engine service information. According to this only 2004 and up have the manufacture date in the serial #
