Internet Explorer 11 is a pre-installed built-in browser for Windows 10. There is no need for you to download Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 10. If you can’t find Internet Explorer in your Windows 10 computer, here’s what you can do to re-enable it.

Just so you know, Internet Explorer wouldn’t be pinned to the taskbar by default. There will also not be a shortcut for it on the desktop unless you create one for it. To find and open Internet Explorer in Windows 10, you will have to manually search for it in the start menu or via Cortana. Go to start menu, type Internet Explorer to open it. Optionally, you can right-click it and then select Pin to Start to have it pinned to your taskbar for easy access.

In some rare circumstances, if you can’t find Internet Explorer anywhere as if it’s totally gone from Windows 10, here’s what you can do to bring it back.

Enable IE 11 in Windows 10 features

Make sure Internet Explorer feature is enabled in the Windows features settings. If Internet Explorer 11 is disabled in Windows Features, it won’t be installed and you won’t be able to find it from the programs list. Here’s how to turn on Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 10

1. Go to start menu.
2. Search for Control Panel and open it.
3. Click on Uninstall a program.
4. From the left pane, click on Turn Windows Features on or off.
5. Scroll down and look for Internet Explorer 11.

Run system file check

System file check is a Windows built-in tool to automatically scan for missing or corrupted system files, such as Internet Explorer, and repair them. Since IE is a part of Windows 10 system, running SFC should be able to fix the issue of missing Internet Explorer in Windows 10. Here’s how to do it.

In start menu, type cmd. Right-click Command Prompt from the search result and then select Run as administrator. In the command prompt, type sfc /scannow. Wait for the process to complete. Restart your computer when it’s done.

DISM check to re-enable Internet Explorer in Windows 10

If even running system file check can’t bring back Internet Explorer for Windows 10, do the following.

Open command prompt (with admin privilege) as instructed above. In the command prompt, type the following command. This command is to temporary disable Internet Explorer.

Restart your computer after executing the above command. On your next boot up, open command prompt again and type the following commands. Press Enter key after each line of command. These commands are to delete the temporary files that may cause conflicts between software, including Internet Explorer.

After all the commands above are executed, enter the following command to re-enable Internet Explorer for Windows 10.

Check iexplorer.exe in Internet Explorer folder

Sometimes when iexplorer.exe is infected by virus or malwares, your antivirus software or Windows defender will quarantine it. Thus, making it unable to be launched or found from the folder. It could also be other reason that iexplorer.exe may have been deleted from Internet Explorer folder.

Go to C:Program Files (x86) or C:Program Files. Look for Internet Explorer folder. Open the folder and check if iexplorer.exe is in the folder. If it isn’t in the folder, you can try to copy the iexplorer.exe file from another Windows 10 PC and paste it to the problem computer. We’ve tried fixing it this way on one of our customer computers and it magically works again.

Since there are no standalone Internet Explorer installation for Windows 10, and IE 11 is already pre-installed in Windows 10, you can’t downgrade the existing Internet Explorer 11 in Windows 10 to Internet Explorer 10. A downgrade from IE 11 to IE 10 is not possible in Windows 10. It’s because Microsoft has no intention of releasing any offline or standalone Internet Explorer installation for Windows 10. The existing Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 10 is the only version you can use in Windows 10.
